Elfyn Evans and co-driver Scott Martin have claimed the 2026 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) title after a dramatic conclusion at Rally Italia Sardinia this past weekend. The victory marks the end of a long campaign defined by repeated near-misses, with Evans finishing as runner-up five times since 2020, including three championship deciders lost on the final day.
Leading the championship standings before the event, Evans faced a critical setback when a puncture on Sunday’s Wolf Power Stage forced an unscheduled tire change. His teammate Oliver Solberg, who had taken the event lead, crashed just two corners from the finish line, handing Evans the title. The Welsh driver’s triumph comes after 13 rally wins and 51 podium finishes throughout his career.
Evans becomes the first Welsh driver, and only the third from the UK, to win the WRC, following Colin McRae (1995) and Richard Burns (2001). His success concludes a five-year stretch where he and Martin narrowly missed the championship each time, despite delivering strong performances. The victory also resolves a pattern of heartbreaking losses that had frustrated Evans for years.

In a post-race interview, Evans expressed regret over the circumstances of his win, particularly for Solberg’s misfortune. “I don’t think it’s quite sunk in yet,” he said. “I didn’t drive the best stage. I threw everything at it, but it wasn’t clean. I feel sorry for Oliver [Solberg] as well; he did an incredible weekend, and I’m sorry for him to lose it so close to the finish there.” The driver credited his team, supporters, and Martin for their contributions to the championship.
Adding historical significance, Evans’ father, Gwyndaf Evans, was the 1996 British Rally Champion and a former WRC competitor. With the WRC returning to Britain in 2027, Evans will now aim to defend his title at Rally Scotland, which will be broadcast live by the BBC. The event presents an opportunity for Evans to further solidify his legacy in motorsport.
The championship decision at Rally Italia Sardinia shows Evans’ resilience, as he overcame a mechanical setback and teammate’s crash to secure the title. His victory not only fulfills a long-standing ambition but also cements his place among Britain’s most successful rally drivers.
