Honda is taking on the Baja 1000 with a 1,300-horsepower hybrid Passport race truck. The Baja Spec model targets the Trophy Truck class, a challenge Honda hasn’t tackled before. This marks a significant step for Honda, as the automaker aims to conquer one of the most demanding off-road races in the world, leveraging its extensive motorsport expertise.

The automaker partnered with Mason Motorsports and Baja champion Bryce Menzies to build the vehicle. It features a Passport-like body on a Mason Gen 2 chassis, delivering 25 inches of front wheel travel and 32 inches in the rear. This collaboration combines Mason’s chassis expertise with Honda’s engineering prowess, ensuring the truck is both agile and robust for the harsh desert terrain.

A Unique Hybrid Powertrain

Unlike standard Trophy Trucks with 9.0-liter V8s, Honda uses a 2.4-liter twin-turbo V6 paired with an 800-volt hybrid system. The setup produces over 1,300 horsepower and is based on Acura’s ARX-06 race car engine. Durability should be quite good, considering the ARX has won the 24 Hours of Daytona and other incredibly difficult endurance races. This hybrid approach not only boosts power but also showcases Honda’s commitment to innovative and sustainable racing technologies.

The battery pack, built at HRC’s California facility, uses pouch cells in a carbon-fiber case—technology borrowed from Formula 1 cars. While adding weight, the hybrid system should reduce fuel stops, an advantage with a 145-gallon fuel cell. This design ensures the truck can maintain high speeds over long distances without frequent pit stops, a critical factor in endurance racing.

Innovative Drivetrain Design

The truck features a twin-angled five-speed transmission developed by Mason Motorsports. Power routes through a transfer case ahead of the engine, with separate driveshafts for each rear hub. This design minimizes low-hanging components vulnerable to damage. The unique transmission and drivetrain layout are engineered to withstand the extreme stresses of off-road racing while optimizing power delivery to all four wheels.

Front wheels receive power via portal axles, further reducing exposed parts. The setup aims to enhance durability in harsh desert conditions. By raising critical components, Honda reduces the risk of damage from rocks, ruts, and other obstacles, ensuring the truck can maintain performance throughout the race.

Targeting Victory in 2027

Honda aims to win the 60th anniversary Baja 1000 in 2027. The Passport Baja Spec will debut at the Baja 500 on June 2nd, 2027, as a prelude to the main event in November. This strategic debut allows Honda to test the truck’s capabilities in a competitive environment before the flagship race, ensuring it’s fully prepared for the challenges of the Baja 1000.
