Toyota is testing a new 2.0-liter inline-four engine in its GR86 sports car. The naturally aspirated unit, codenamed G20E, is part of a new family of smaller, lighter four-cylinder engines from the Japanese automaker. This mid-engined sports car, believed to preview the long-awaited MR2 successor, stole the spotlight during the latest round of Japan’s Super Taikyu endurance racing series, where it showcased Toyota’s commitment to innovation in performance vehicles.
The test took place at the Okayama International Circuit during the latest round of Japan’s Super Taikyu endurance racing series. Alongside the GR86, Toyota also brought a mid-engined prototype, further emphasizing its focus on developing cutting-edge sports car technologies.
A New Engine for the GR86
The GR86 Future FR Concept, an experimental prototype, features the G20E engine, which produces around 220 horsepower. This is a departure from the turbocharged three-cylinder used in the racing version of the GR86, which was based on the GR Yaris and GR Corolla’s 1.6-liter engine. A few years ago, Toyota fitted the coupe with this 1.6-liter engine, producing around 300 horsepower, to test synthetic fuels using a destroked 1.4-liter version. The shift to the G20E marks a new direction in Toyota’s engine development strategy.
According to Gazoo Racing driver Kazuya Oshima, the new engine revs higher than expected and provides more immediate throttle response. The double-wishbone suspension at both ends further enhances the car’s handling, with engineers testing various geometries to optimize performance. The removal of the turbocharger has also made the front end lighter, eliminating turbo lag and improving responsiveness, particularly when accelerating out of corners.
What’s Next for the GR86?
Toyota has not confirmed whether the next-generation GR86 will use the G20E engine or stick with its current Subaru-sourced 2.4-liter boxer engine. The GR86 has historically relied on Subaru-sourced boxer engines. This uncertainty raises questions about the future of Toyota’s partnership with Subaru.
Toyota’s Commitment to Affordable Sports Cars
One thing is clear: Toyota is committed to keeping the affordable sports car alive. The GR86 has become a popular choice for enthusiasts seeking a relatively attainable, rear-wheel-drive coupe. With the G20E engine, Toyota is exploring new ways to improve performance and potentially reduce costs. The company has also been testing its new engines in other vehicles, including a Lexus IS at Fuji Speedway, where engineers highlighted the benefits of a smaller engine’s placement for lowering the center of gravity.
Toyota’s new four-cylinder engines have been the subject of significant hype. The automaker aims to use these engines across its lineup, emphasizing their versatility and potential for high performance. As Toyota continues to develop its new four-cylinder engines, fans can expect to see more innovations in the coming years, solidifying the company’s position as a leader in affordable, high-performance sports cars.
