Mercedes reveals longest-range AMG GT53 EV

The Mercedes-AMG GT53 4-Door Coupe has been unveiled as the longest-range version of the brand’s electric sedan, trading power for efficiency.

A spokesperson for Mercedes-Benz Australia stated the GT53 is “under consideration” for the local market but remains unconfirmed for release, like its higher-performance siblings.

Less power, more range

The GT53 serves as the entry-level variant in the second-generation GT 4-Door Coupe lineup. It uses two electric motors instead of three, producing 400kW of peak power and 800Nm of torque—well below the 600kW and 1800Nm of the GT55, or the 860kW and 2000Nm of the GT63.

Continuous output is also lower at 270kW, compared to 375kW for the GT55 and 530kW for the GT63. The difference in power results in slower acceleration: the GT53 takes 3.9 seconds to reach 100km/h, while the GT55 achieves it in 2.8 seconds and the GT63 in 2.4 seconds.

The trade-off comes in range. The GT53 delivers between 682km and 809km on the WLTP cycle, depending on configuration. The GT55 offers 597km to 700km, and the GT63 covers 596km to 696km.

All variants share the same 106kWh battery, 800V electrical architecture, and two-speed transmission. The company claims the GT53 can add over 534km of range in 10 minutes of DC charging at up to 600kW. The system also supports 400V charging.

Energy consumption is rated at 15.6-18.5kWh per 100km. The front electric motor disengages under low load to improve efficiency, acting as a boost motor when required.

Sound and feel designed to mimic combustion

Mercedes-AMG’s acoustic engineers studied the sound of its inline six-cylinder engine to create the GT53’s artificial exhaust note. They used the previous AMG E53 Coupe as an acoustic reference, recording at 16 different microphone positions inside and outside the vehicle.

The result delivers what the company calls “genuine goosebump moments—unmistakable, intense, and typically AMG.” The synthetic engine sound is audible both inside and outside the car.

To further simulate a traditional sports sedan, the GT53 includes paddle shifters for manual gear selection. These simulated shifts also occur automatically in AMGFORCE Sport+ mode.

Other drive modes include Comfort, Sport, Slippery, Eco, and Individual. The model rides on AMG Ride Control suspension with air springs and adaptive damping, adjustable between Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ settings. The AMG Performance 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system also supports rear-wheel torque vectoring.

Size, tech, and pricing

The new GT 4-Door Coupe measures 5094mm long, 1959mm wide, and 1411mm tall—46mm longer, 6mm wider, and 42mm lower than its predecessor. It features shorter overhangs and a longer 3040mm wheelbase, up from 2951mm.

The interior includes a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14-inch central touchscreen angled toward the driver. A Sky Control panoramic glass roof can switch between transparent and opaque. Rear passengers sit in individual bucket seats.

In Germany, the GT53 starts at €115,430 (around A$189,200), making it significantly more affordable than the GT55, which begins at €154,700 (A$253,500).
