The BYD Atto 3 Evo has been confirmed for Australian showrooms, bringing substantial upgrades and expanded powertrain options to the longest-serving model in the brand’s lineup. The updated small to medium electric SUV is set to arrive in September 2026, though local pricing and exact specifications remain unconfirmed at this stage. The Chinese automaker has actually put up a page on their website letting folks express interest in the vehicle ahead of first customer deliveries.
Technical Upgrades and Powertrain Options
The Atto 3 Evo takes its name from BYD’s new e-Platform 3.0 Evo architecture, which introduces significant changes under the skin. Despite identical length, width, height, and wheelbase measurements to the current model, the upgrades are substantial. Overseas variants feature a 74.8kWh Blade lithium iron phosphate battery. The rear-wheel drive version produces 230kW of power and 380Nm of torque, achieving a 0-100km/h time of 5.5 seconds. The Essential, by comparison, completes the sprint in 7.9 seconds.
Charging speed represents a major upgrade, with the new model capable of a peak rate of 220kW. BYD claims a 10 to 80 per cent recharge can be completed in around 25 minutes. The AWD configuration adds a second motor, lifting total outputs to 330kW and 560Nm. Despite the additional power, this version still offers 3.3kW vehicle-to-load capability. However, the AWD Atto 3 Evo is not expected to be offered in Australia. Pricing constraints may prevent this.

The four-year-old FWD Atto 3 is expected to remain on sale, with the RWD Evo likely to be positioned above it as a more expensive model. This pricing strategy will be critical as the market segment becomes increasingly crowded with options like the MG S5 EV and Geely EX5.
Interior and Practicality Changes
Despite the lack of exterior changes, the interior has seen significant updates to improve comfort and functionality. The dashboard now features a 15.6-inch rotating central touchscreen as standard, replacing the previous 12.8-inch display found in the Essential. New features include Google services, AI-powered voice control, and NFC key access. The digital instrument cluster also grows from 5.0 inches to 8.8 inches.
Practicality has improved with a 50-liter increase in boot capacity to 490 liters, expanding to 1360L with the rear seatbacks folded. A new 101-liter front trunk adds storage options that the current model lacks. The suspension has also been upgraded to a five-link rear setup designed to improve ride comfort and stability for second-row passengers.

Market Context and Sales Performance
The release arrives during a critical juncture for BYD in Australia. The Atto 3, which launched in 2022, recorded a 64.6 percent year-on-year sales increase during the first half of 2026. It contributed 3052 sales to the brand’s total, helping BYD climb to second place behind Toyota in recent months. The model has helped the brand gain ground in a market that is rapidly shifting toward electric vehicles.
The Atto 3 faces stiff competition from established rivals in the compact electric SUV sector. By adopting the newer e-Platform 3.0 Evo, BYD aims to close the gap on charging speeds and performance hardware. The move suggests the brand is refining its strategy to move beyond the budget-friendly segment and target buyers seeking more advanced electric vehicle technology. The new Atto 3 Evo will join recently released Seal 6 Touring and M9 people mover in the lineup.
