Utemaster launches lid accessory for Ranger and HiLux

Utemaster has launched a hard tub lid aimed at Australian ute owners, fitting models such as the Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux and Mitsubishi Triton.

Product details and pricing

The Hard Lid, the first item in the Gearforce line, features a 5052‑grade aluminium skin finished in black powder‑coat. It includes built‑in gas struts and side rails, and the company backs it with a three‑year warranty. Priced at $3,500 plus GST, the lid is compatible with current‑generation versions of the BYD Shark 6, Ford Ranger, GWM Cannon Alpha, Isuzu D‑Max, Kia Tasman, LDV T60, Mazda BT‑50, Mitsubishi Triton, Nissan Navara, Toyota HiLux and Volkswagen Amarok, as well as 2015‑25 HiLux models.

Additional components can be added for extra functionality. A lid spacer kit costs $140, a light kit is $85, cross bars are $149 each, and an accessory load‑balancing kit is priced at $190. For utes lacking central tailgate locking, a central‑locking loom is offered for $261 plus GST. All parts are manufactured in New Zealand, where the firm was founded.

Design and installation

The lid’s design eliminates loose bolts or rivets in the main structure, which should keep the unit tight over time. A front seal directs water away from the tub, reducing the risk of leaks. The locking mechanism integrates with the tailgate; no exposed locks are visible. Whether the tailgate is open or closed, the lid can be operated independently, allowing owners to access the tub without removing the cover.

Installation does not require professional assistance. The product ships fully assembled, and the manufacturer describes the fitting process as “straightforward DIY”. A quick‑release system lets owners detach the lid quickly if they need unrestricted tub access. The lid is rated for a 200 kg dynamic load or a 400 kg static load, providing a solid barrier for most typical ute cargo.

Market reception and practical considerations

Early responses from ute enthusiasts suggest the Hard Lid fills a niche that has been largely unserved in the Australian market. The ability to add a secure, weather‑proof cover without major modifications may appeal to owners who use their vehicles for both work and recreation. However, the price point places the accessory at the higher end of the aftermarket segment, which could limit adoption among budget‑conscious buyers.

From a practical standpoint, the integrated side rails could simplify the mounting of additional cargo solutions, such as cross bars or roof racks, while the gas struts aid in opening and closing the lid with minimal effort. The inclusion of a load‑balancing kit also indicates awareness of the weight distribution challenges that can affect vehicle handling.

Real‑world testing will ultimately determine longevity. The aluminium skin and powder‑coat finish are designed for durability, yet prolonged exposure to extreme heat or heavy rain will reveal true performance.

Utemaster’s move to produce a broader accessory suite suggests a longer‑term strategy to become a one‑stop source for ute customization. If the Hard Lid proves reliable, the firm may expand the Gearforce line with more specialized components, potentially influencing how Australian ute owners approach aftermarket upgrades.
