The Defender OCTA, Land Rover’s flagship off-roader, will lose nearly 100 horsepower in Europe and select markets to meet stricter emissions rules. The BMW-sourced 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 now produces 533 hp—down 93 hp from its previous 626 hp output.

Performance takes a hit, but torque stays the same

The detuned engine still delivers 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque, unchanged from before. However, the OCTA’s acceleration has slowed. The 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint now takes 4.4 seconds, 0.4 seconds longer than the previous version.

Land Rover engineers didn’t just reduce power—they also reworked the exhaust system. The result is a deeper, more aggressive engine note, a small consolation for drivers losing outright performance.

The changes apply only to Euro-spec models, where the Euro 6e-bis emissions standard now requires stricter compliance. The Defender OCTA uses a mild-hybrid setup, but unlike some competitors, it doesn’t pair the V8 with a plug-in hybrid system to offset power losses.

BMW’s V8 faces similar cuts in other models

This isn’t the first time BMW’s S68 V8 has been detuned for emissions. Earlier this year, the same engine in the European-spec M5 lost 41 hp, though BMW mitigated the impact by boosting the car’s electric motor output. The combined system output remained unchanged, a luxury the Defender OCTA doesn’t have.

The V8 still has a future, even in Europe. BMW has already engineered it to meet the upcoming Euro 7 standard, extending its lifespan likely into the 2030s. The engine also powers the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, and will appear in next year’s M Performance versions of the new X5, facelifted 7 Series, and second-generation X7.

Other luxury brands are making similar moves. Porsche and Mercedes plan to keep their largest combustion engines alive into the next decade, while Rolls-Royce and Maybach continue offering V12s. Still, the writing is on the wall: automakers must cut fleet CO2 emissions by 90% by 2035 compared to 2021 levels, making high-displacement engines harder to justify without offsetting EV sales.

The Defender OCTA’s power reduction reflects a broader trend in Europe, where emissions regulations have forced automakers to make difficult choices. Mazda, for example, retired the MX-5 Miata’s 2.0-liter engine entirely rather than modify it to meet new standards. For now, the V8 survives—but its days are numbered unless manufacturers can balance their fleets with enough zero-emission vehicles to avoid hefty fines.

Land Rover hasn’t announced whether the detuned V8 will reach other markets, but the OCTA’s future in Europe is clear: less power, but compliance.
