Recent news that the Camaro will be returning for a seventh generation set the internet abuzz like a nest of bumblebees. In an age when shoppers for attainable performance cars are drinking from a shrinking watering hole, there’s a burst of welcome rain from General Motors. Having the Camaro around again is good for enthusiasts—including Mustang fans. A little friendly competition is just what the ‘Stang needs to sharpen its steel.
A Blast from the Past
However, we’re still going to be waiting a few years to get our hands on a new Camaro album, so to speak, so how about a past hit? This 1984 Camaro Z28 is on Bring a Trailer right now (which, like Car and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos), and it’s basically as close as you can get to buying a brand-new Chevrolet pony car in the mid-1980s. And check it out, three pedals and a stick! Time to get footloose
A Camaro Classic
The first- and second-generation Camaros get plenty of love in the history books, whether it’s Team Penske’s Trans-Am winners or the clean look of an early-1970s car. The third-gen Camaro, though, was at least as successful and has huge nostalgic appeal these days.
A Unicorn of a Find
This example is a bit of a unicorn, even beyond its ultra-low, 4400-mile odometer reading. It was ordered with some unusual and desirable options, including an L69 V-8 and 3.73:1 gears with a positraction rear axle.
A Powerful Engine
New from the factory, the L69 305-cubic-inch V-8 was good for a claimed 190 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque, 10 more than the standard eight cylinder. The shorter gearing makes the most of that power for respectable acceleration times, and this car was delivered without air conditioning to sap any ponies.
A Timeless Look
Red over grey two-tone paint is a classic combo, and the interior’s in such a well-preserved condition that it looks like no one ever actually sat in it. Throw in the in-dash cassette deck, and even Doc Brown couldn’t build a better 1980s time machine.
A Well-Cared-For Car
This Camaro is said to have remained with one owner from new until February of this year. The fluids have been refreshed, and it’s ready for a new owner to start adding some miles to that odometer. With the higher-output V-8 and minimal extras, this car should deliver on the Camaro performance you might have dreamed about as a middle-schooler at the time.
A Reason to Wait
It’s good news that the Camaro’s coming back, but the Camaro you remember is available now. Why wait?

The auction ends on April 21.
